The African Development Bank Group has approved an additional €217 million to complete two major road infrastructure projects in East Africa: the 27.3 km Busega–Mpigi Expressway in Uganda and the 208 km Kagitumba–Kayonza–Rusumo Road connecting Rwanda and Tanzania. The investment will drastically cut travel times—reducing journeys on the Ugandan section from over two hours to less than 45 minutes—and enhance regional trade efficiency across the Great Lakes corridor.
The projects are central to the East African transport network linking Uganda’s capital to key Tanzanian ports and neighboring markets. The Busega–Mpigi Expressway will decongest traffic on the outskirts of Kampala and connect directly with the Entebbe–Kampala Expressway, while the Kagitumba–Kayonza–Rusumo corridor will strengthen Rwanda’s access to Tanzania’s ports and Uganda’s transit routes. Upgrades include additional lanes, new interchanges, and improved surface standards designed to meet international specifications.
This new funding highlights the Bank’s ongoing commitment to regional integration, trade facilitation, and infrastructure resilience. It also signals growing investor confidence in East Africa’s transport sector and the potential to generate long-term returns through tolling systems, logistics hubs, and infrastructure services. Public-private partnerships are expected to play a key role during the operational phase.
The completion of these corridors opens strong opportunities for companies in construction, logistics, and digital infrastructure. Demand is expected to rise for road engineering firms, materials suppliers, and smart toll technology providers. Investors may also find entry points in concession management, warehousing, cross-border transport services, and logistics park development. Local SMEs stand to benefit through subcontracting, service provision, and ancillary support linked to regional trade expansion.
