Chinese automaker Geely is preparing to launch its first internal combustion engine vehicle in South Africa, marking a shift from its initial focus on new energy vehicles. The move is part of a broader plan to grow its local lineup to about 10 models by the end of 2026.
Geely entered South Africa late last year with two new energy vehicles, including a battery electric model and a plug-in hybrid. The company initially targeted early adopters in a market that is still dominated by petrol-powered cars.
Quentin Oppermann, general manager of Geely South Africa’s Galaxy brand, said the company decided it needed an ICE model to widen its appeal. He said the addition would help Geely compete more directly with established brands such as Chery, VW, Suzuki and Toyota.
Despite limited EV adoption in South Africa, Geely has seen strong demand for its electric vehicles, especially the E2, which it launched in April as the country’s most affordable EV. The first batch sold out in two weeks, and the second batch is already fully booked.
The company said rising fuel prices and improving charging infrastructure are helping support interest in EVs. Even so, Geely is moving ahead with a broader strategy that combines electrification with conventional engines to reach more buyers.
Geely also plans to expand its dealership network quickly. It currently has 33 dealerships operating nationwide and wants to grow that figure to about 50 by the end of the year.
