Somaliland President Abdirahman Mohamed Abdullahi attended the World Economic Forum in Davos this week as part of a campaign to win international recognition for Somaliland and promote investment opportunities in the breakaway region.
One of his key meetings, according to an aide, was with Eric Trump, son of U.S. President Donald Trump and a senior executive within the Trump family’s global business interests.
The meeting took place on Wednesday in a nearby hotel conference room while President Donald Trump was addressing business leaders at the forum, and Israel’s President Isaac Herzog also attended; Israel recognised Somaliland last month, the first United Nations member state to do so.
During the closed-door discussion, Abdullahi outlined investment opportunities, highlighting Somaliland’s deep-sea port of Berbera, which lies along one of the world’s busiest shipping routes, according to two people present.
“The meeting went well, it went very well,” Abdullahi told Reuters on Thursday, confirming he met both Eric Trump and Herzog.
Eric Trump’s spokeswoman did not respond to a request for comment, and the White House also did not respond; Herzog said on X that he was pleased to meet his Somaliland counterpart.
Somaliland has maintained effective autonomy and relative stability since 1991, when Somalia descended into civil war, but it has struggled to secure broad international recognition.
