MMC operates the world's largest refinery of high-grade, selenium-free EMM outside China, serving over 120 customers in 20 countries and exporting 95% of its annual output. The material supports key applications in lithium-ion batteries, alloying, welding, and electronics, underscoring its role in industrial and energy transition demands.
The Mbombela facility in Mpumalanga province faced challenges from unstable power supplies straining aging transformers, where continuous operation is essential. ABB deployed its AC 800PEC high-performance controller alongside high-power rectifier technology, including six MCR1000 units, designed for rapid response to fluctuations with control loops at 100-microsecond cycle times.
This setup delivers precise power management, maximizing availability and productivity in high-power rectifier applications. MMC's Chief Operating Officer Teheli Morabe noted that older rectifier technology previously caused trips during adverse weather or grid issues, threatening market position without tolerance for downtime.
The advanced system has significantly cut unplanned outages, enhancing predictability and process reliability. ABB's Global Business Unit Manager Ralph Burgener highlighted how the technology addresses South Africa's power challenges, enabling international competitiveness in line with the company's mission.
