Remittances from Moroccans living abroad continue to play a major role in supporting the country’s economy. According to the latest Exchange Office data, diaspora transfers exceeded $12.4 billion by the end of 2025.
That followed receipts of more than $11.7 billion in 2024, equal to over 8% of Morocco’s GDP. The World Bank says Morocco remains among the leading remittance recipients in the Middle East and North Africa region.
More than 5 million Moroccans live abroad, mainly in Europe. France is the largest destination, followed by Spain, Belgium and the Netherlands.
Beyond family support, Rabat wants to channel more of the diaspora’s capital and expertise into productive investment. The aim is to back industrial projects and value-adding sectors that can support growth and jobs at home.
That reflects a broader push to turn remittance flows into a longer-term development tool rather than only a household safety net. For Morocco, diaspora money remains both a macroeconomic cushion and a source of social stability.
