Kenya has signed a $1.2 billion deal with China Road and Bridge Corporation to expand Nairobi’s Jomo Kenyatta International Airport. Transport Minister Davis Chirchir said the project will nearly triple the airport’s capacity to 22 million passengers a year.
The plan includes a new passenger terminal and rehabilitation work on existing runways and aprons. Kenya had previously put the project on hold in 2024 after cancelling a deal with India’s Adani Group following bribery and fraud indictments against Gautam Adani in the United States.
Chirchir said last week that Nairobi had appointed the Africa Finance Corporation and the Trade and Development Bank to arrange financing for the project. The renewed push is intended to restore momentum around one of Kenya’s most important transport infrastructure projects.
The airport expansion comes as Nairobi’s position as East Africa’s leading aviation hub faces growing pressure from Rwanda and Ethiopia. Both countries are increasing investment in their airports in an effort to attract more airlines and passengers.
The project is part of Kenya’s broader effort to expand transport capacity and reinforce the role of Jomo Kenyatta International Airport as a regional gateway. The deal also signals a return to a major airport upgrade after the earlier pause disrupted the original development timeline.
