SPAR International has officially entered the Rwandan market, launching its first supermarket in Kigali's upscale Nyarutarama suburb through a partnership with local retailer Sawa Citi. This move marks SPAR's debut in East Africa and extends its footprint to 12 African countries.
Sawa Citi, Rwanda's second-largest supermarket operator, plans to rebrand its existing nine stores under the SPAR banner. The newly opened 570m² store offers a range of fresh produce, dairy, frozen goods, dry groceries, and alcoholic beverages, blending SPAR's global retail standards with local market preferences.
The partnership aims to introduce modern retail services to Rwanda, including online ordering and home delivery, catering to the country's growing middle class and urban population. This expansion is expected to enhance competition in the local retail sector, encouraging improvements in pricing strategies and customer service among existing players.
As SPAR Rwanda plans further expansion across Kigali and other urban areas, the retail landscape is poised for significant transformation, offering consumers increased access to quality products and services
