A collapse at the Umm Fakrun gold mine in Abu Jubeiha locality in South Kordofan has left at least six miners dead, 12 injured and dozens still missing as searchers worked through the rubble.
In a statement seen by Radio Dabanga, the Sudanese Doctors Network said it was deeply concerned by the incident and called for intensified rescue efforts and urgent first aid for the injured, including provision of necessary medical care.
The network urged the Sudanese Mineral Resources Company and relevant authorities to take immediate and serious steps to protect miners and to establish clear, binding guidelines for traditional mining. It said these should include occupational safety standards, training and periodic monitoring to reduce the risk of repeat disasters.
The Sudanese Doctors Network said official authorities bear full responsibility for the incident, citing what it described as disregard for safety requirements, weak oversight of mining sites and institutional negligence. It called for accountability and urgent practical measures to prevent similar tragedies.
Rescue operations were continuing while the fate of those still missing remained unclear.
