Sun King Zambia received a €1.2 million grant from the Modern Cooking Facility for Africa (MCFA), announced on December 4, to expand its electric cooking programme targeting deployment of up to 45,000 induction cookstoves by 2029. The award contributes to MCFA’s €22.3 million allocation across 13 companies in sub-Saharan Africa, which is mobilising an additional €13.6 million in co-financing for clean cooking solutions.
The programme targets urban and peri-urban households connected to Zambia’s national grid, where clean cooking access remains at just 8.9% against a government 2030 target of 40%. Sun King will distribute induction stoves equipped with smart-metering systems supporting pay-as-you-go payments to reduce upfront costs for consumers. The company, operating in Zambia since 2021 under its Greenlight Planet brand, has already distributed over one million solar kits in the country.
Sun King’s Head of Clean Cooking Mark O’Keefe said the partnership “will expand access to electric cooking for households and small businesses.” MCFA disbursed €5.7 million across its portfolio in 2024, reaching 18,000 people year-to-date with modern cooking technologies aimed at reducing reliance on biomass fuels.
