Uganda's President Yoweri Museveni on Wednesday witnessed the signing of an aircraft acquisition agreement between state-owned Uganda Airlines and U.S. planemaker Boeing for 10 new aircraft. The fleet expansion, which includes passenger and cargo aircraft, will strengthen trade, tourism, and investment, and position Uganda as a key regional aviation hub.
The agreement was worth 3.7 trillion Ugandan shillings ($984.64 million), according to Ugandan broadcaster UBC. This significant investment represents a major expansion of Uganda Airlines' operational capacity.
The fleet expansion will include both passenger and cargo aircraft, enabling Uganda Airlines to serve diverse market segments. The addition of cargo capacity will support the country's export sectors and enhance logistics capabilities.
Positioning Uganda as a key regional aviation hub aligns with the government's broader economic development strategy. Improved air connectivity is expected to boost tourism arrivals and facilitate business investment.
The signing ceremony took place at State House, with President Museveni witnessing the agreement between Uganda Airlines and Boeing. This high-level governmental involvement demonstrates the project's importance to Uganda's national development agenda.
