Wits University has launched a leadership development pipeline funded by the ETDP SETA, piloting two programmes in 2025 ahead of a broader rollout in 2026 aimed at strengthening managerial capability across South Africa’s higher education sector.
The Human Resources Development Unit initiated the framework this year, with a transition plan to scale from pilot phase to full maturity in 2026. Two programmes began in September: the Supervisory Development Programme delivered with Wits Plus and the Management Development Programme run in partnership with Common Purpose South Africa. The inaugural cohort includes 54 participants, with initial modules reported to offer strong professional value.
For 2026, Wits plans to introduce a Team Leader tier and a Senior Leadership Development Programme while rerunning the SDP and MDP to widen participation and reinforce the pipeline’s coverage. The initiative reflects sustained demand for structured managerial training in South African universities, seeking to improve operational effectiveness, project execution, and institutional resilience.
Partnerships with Wits Plus and Common Purpose highlight growing opportunities for education services providers aligned with SETA-funded skills priorities. The expanded tiers will support succession planning and strengthen leadership depth in a sector managing complex governance, regulatory, and operational pressures.
